Different aspects of a book serve important roles to make the book more credible and effective. Not all items listed below apply to all books but authors can decide what’s most important to their work and what will communicate their message most effectively.

Book Cover: A cover usually includes front, back, and spine. A well designed cover will attract potential readers. Once you have the reader’s attention, they will want to know what the book is about. We usually have the book summary or highlights on top of the back cover followed by one or two key endorsements by people with credentials. A short bio can be added to the lower part of the back cover. The spine’s design is also important to enhance the overall look of a book.

Endorsements: This section is optional and is generally at the beginning of the book if you can get more than two or three endorsements from recognizable people. Additional endorsements can add greater value and credibility to the book. Some times this section is added on the second edition.
First title page: This title page with only the title of the book leaves enough room for author to do book signing or autograph the book.
Second title page: This page has full title, sub-title, author’s name, and publisher’s name or logo.

Copyright page: Generally on the back of title page. This contains author’s copyright, publisher’s name, cover and text designer’s name, photographer’s name if applicable, copyright infringement warning, permission of use of copyrighted material and recognition of the source, Library of Congress number, ISBN number, author’s name, and contact information etc.

Dedication page: This page is in memory of or in recognition of the significant person the book is dedicated to.

Table of contents: List of sections and chapters of the book with page numbers.

Foreword: This page is written by a recognizable person endorsing the book and the author.

Acknowledgements: This page is generally written by the author recognizing all the significant people who made this project possible and showing appreciation and gratitude towards them.

Introduction: This page introduces the book and how it came about. Some books may have special features that are explained in this section.

Book chapters: The actual text of the book is divided into chapters. Chapters can be small or large depending on the subject matter.

About the author: This contains full biography of the author. It can be included in the beginning or at the end.

Footnotes: Footnote are brief notes at the bottom of a page explaining a point in the text or indicating the source of quotation or idea used by the author.

Conclusion or Epilogue: This is optional and used by some authors to summarize the book at the end.

Bibliography: A list of references given at the end of a book. This includes citations to journal articles, books and other materials on a particular subject or by another author.
